The FTSE 100 Index roared to its highest close since last October yesterday as strong banking results and a renewed surge from mining stocks cheered investors.

Barclays and HSBC surged almost seven per cent and five per cent respectively after half-year surpluses of pounds 3 billion and pounds 2.8 billion.
