State gets a new education commissioner
The state Board of Regents unanimously elected David M. Steiner, dean of Hunter College's School of Education, as state education commissioner at its monthly meeting in Buffalo. Steiner used his first news conference to emphasize the work that needs to be done to improve the quality of New York's public education and to close the achievement gap between its white and minority students.
Steiner will take over the position on Oct. 1. His annual salary will be $250,000 -- about $55,000 more than the sum paid to Richard Mills, who stepped down in June after 14 years on the job. Mills has been credited with raising ...
