Thus lamented Hamlet -- as well as countless Americans, half of whom report trouble sleeping at some time, and 12 percent have frequent problems with sleep. For example:
* A 70-year-old man leaps from bed to fight off those attacking him in his dream -- and his wife takes a physical beating.
* A young secretary who must get up for work at 7 a.m. can't get to sleep before 2 or 3 a.m. -- and feels the effect all day.
