You can't take it with you - at least not yet. Number portability is slated to begin this fall, but don't hold your breath.
Local number portability (LNP) is widely regarded as indispensable to meaningful competition. The reason is simple: Fewer residential and business customers will be willing to change service providers if doing so requires changing phone numbers. The high stakes associated with local number portability - it will affect almost every call on every network - accounts for why the issue is so contentious.
