Snapshot photography was not always child's play--19th-century photographers had to tote wagonloads of chemicals to capture only stock-still subjects. But for at least the past few decades, picture taking has been as simple as point, squint, and click.

So what's the allure of digital cameras? Sure, taking a snapshot is just as easy, but after that, chores you once passed to the clerk behind the drugstore counter are now in your hands. You move the images from camera to computer. You manipulate the pictures on the PC. You print them out on paper.
