Apr. 19--Even by Silicon Valley standards, entrepreneur Trip Hawkins -- the founder and CEO of 3DO Co. in Redwood City -- has a business history rife with ups and downs.
Before 3DO, Hawkins founded San Mateo-based Electronic Arts Inc., a maker of video game hardware and software expected to approach $1 billion in revenues this year. Nonetheless, success bred dissatisfaction with the restrictive practices that industry giants Nintendo Co. and Sega Enterprises Ltd. used to dominate the market. That prodded Hawkins to leave Electronic Arts to form 3DO and create a "federation" of cooperative software and hardware licensees.
