* What could the UK learn from the trouble-free creation of the Canadian food agency?
A food watchdog body with the support of the industry which provides 25% of its funding? It might sound too good to be true but it became a reality in Canada last April.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which employs 4,800 people and is responsible for a budget of $315m, has a mandate which includes food inspection and responsibility for animal and plant health, feeds, seeds and fertilisers. Its creation 12 months ago was heralded as one of the "new ways of doing business" and as a way of "getting government right".
