NEW YORK -- Cool, rainy weather dampened an already sluggish retail industry in June.

The month that traditionally begins the summer shopping season, when consumers seek out air conditioners, barbecue equipment and cameras, produced poor sales even at warehouse club operators.

Same-store sales at Costco Wholesale Corp. dropped 6%, as shoppers shunned high-ticket items. The chain's total volume dipped 4% from June 2008 to $6.88 billion. Excluding the negative effect of a slide in gasoline prices, however, United States comparable-store sales would have been down just 1%.
