Approximately 219,000-246,000 babies were born through the use of assisted reproductive technology worldwide in 2002, the most recent year for which data are available.
Moreover, the 2002 estimate represents a 25% increase over the number of babies born using reproductive technology in the year 2000 (Human Reproduction 2009 May 27 [doi: 10.1093/humrep/dep098]).
"This is due not only to an increase in the number of countries participating in this report, but also to an increase in [assisted reproductive technology] activity in most individual countries," the study's lead author, Dr. Jacques de Mouzon, said in a press release.
