While school board members struggled this spring over whether to close Alvord Elementary School, they didn't even blink an eye at closing Alameda Middle School.

The west-side middle school tucked away on La Madera failed to meet academic requirements for years and gained a reputation as a "bad" school.

That perception, real or not, drove parents to take their kids out of Alameda in favor of charter, private or other public middle schools.

By the time school ended this spring, fewer than 200 students attended Alameda, though it was built to hold about 500.
