Herrnstein (1961) proposed that the relationship between responding and reinforcement under concurrent variable-interval schedules of reinforcement (concurrent VI VI} is described by the following equation:
[B.sub.1]/([B.sub.1] + [B.sub.2]) = [r.sub.1]/([r.sub.1] + [r.sub.2]) (1)
where [B.sub.1] and [B.sub.2] are the number of responses to Alternatives 1 and 2, respectively, and [r.sub.1] and [r.sub.2] are the frequencies of reinforcement for the alternative responses.
Baum (1974) proposed a modification to Equation 1 in terms of a power function:
