Taxpayers have a right to know what's going on in their prison systems, good or bad. As public employees, it is our duty to keep them informed. Working with reporters and allowing them access to our prisons and inmates is an important part of any community relations effort.
Reporters' stories often are more accurate when they have access to as much information as possible. For those who worry about security, I have worked for the North Carolina Department of Correction (DOC) for five decades, and I don't know of any serious incident caused by the presence of television cameras or tape recorders in a facility.
