The Fall 1997 issue of the Nieman Reports prominently (pages 2 and 3) carries a "Message from Bill Kovach" publisher of the journal and curator of the Nieman Foundation as well as a "Statement of Concern" about the state of journalism in this country.
Mr. Kovach is greatly concerned about American journalism. He plans to do something about it. I was alarmed not by the text of the Message and the Statement, but how the Nieman Foundation plans "to take up the challenge to aggressively 'promote and elevate the standards of journalism'." The program appeared, on first glance, to resemble a typical "public journalism" project.
