Eldridge Cleaver, the firebrand Black Panther leader, radical polemicist, confessed rapist, international fugitive and, finally, born-again Christian and penniless drug addict, died Friday at 62, bequeathing a legacy as confused and contentious as his famous life.

The father of three died in a hospital in Pomona, Calif., not far from where he recently worked as a consultant to a university diversity task force, counseling non-violence and reconciliation, not the rending of society he preached in 1960s.

The hospital declined to give the cause of death, but his neighbor, Peter Apanel, 47, who lives in a set of artists lofts in Pomona, said Cleaver ...
