This year's chile harvest is a promising one for many New Mexico farms, and vendors have begun the late-summer ritual of setting up gas-fired roasters in Santa Fe parking lots to sell bags of freshly picked peppers.
Farther south, the sight of the healthy fields of plants in major chile-growing areas, such as Hatch, might serve as a sign of hope for growers who have seen their industry suffer in recent years.
