WORCESTER - A whiff of just the right scent can lure man and beast, and maybe even the lowly Asian longhorned beetle.
Researchers are testing that idea this summer by stringing traps from Worcester trees and baiting the traps with cocktails of insect pheromones and compounds known as plant volatiles, a project ultimately aimed at discovering faster, easier ways to detect the presence of the destructive beetles.
The purpose, said Pennsylvania State University post-doctoral researcher Maya E. Nehme, "was to find a good detection method that's better than climbing each tree."
