Australian opposition lawmakers Monday ramped up the pressure on the federal government to amend its planned carbon trading scheme, releasing modeling on an alternative scheme they claim would green up the country at a lower economic cost.

It comes as opposition lawmakers are set to block the government's controversial legislation when it is put to a vote in a finely balanced upper house Thursday, setting in chain the first trigger for a potential early election.
