By charging reasonable water rates, Chilean water utilities have contributed to the reduction in urban household potable water consumption in the country, according to Jose Luis Szczaranski, head of concessions at the country's sanitation service authority SISS, paper El Mercurio reported.
Paying for services is one of the best ways to heighten people's awareness and reduce water waste. "People are conscious of the rates they have to pay. For instance, they no longer irrigate gardens by leaving the hose on without supervision and families with higher incomes install automated irrigation," said Szczaranski.
