If ever an illustration were needed of how deeply embedded in us is the imaginative and symbolic potency of the monarchy, despite everything, the reaction to the death of Diana Princess of Wales certainly supplied it. It is not often in this supposedly disconnected age that we feel linked directly to history, that we remember we are not some kind of atypical aberration in the march of the ages, but the events of last September certainly reminded us.
The headlines in the newspapers were enough to make anyone look twice. "Queen and Earl feud over fate of princes", read one front-page headline, a headline that could just as well have been dated 1597! long articles ...
