An energy initiative involving Elk River schools, the city of Elk River and the Great River Energy utility could end up saving the schools tens of thousands of dollars a year in energy costs, but it will depend in large part on getting federal stimulus money. The project would involve piping surplus heated water from Great River Energy's Elk River Station to four nearby schools, and using stimulus funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to pay most of the costs of laying the pipe.
