This second, revised edition of Peter Gradenwitz's The Music of Israel: Its Rise and Growth through 5000 Years (New York: Norton, 1949) is a comprehensive overview of Jewish music from the time of Abraham up to the Israeli composers of our present decade. Though the initial and final chapters focus on music in the land of the Bible, the bulk of the book recounts the development of Jewish music elsewhere, particularly in predominantly Christian Europe. Gradenwitz has examined much recent research.
