SHREWSBURY - John Freele has watered his roses, lilacs and gardens since 2001 without paying a cent on his water bill.
He uses the water stored in a rain barrel, which collects and stores runoff water from his roof. A hose can be attached to the 55-gallon barrel and used for watering the yard.
His rain barrels, which he sells through The New England Rain Barrel Co. in Peabody, have grown in popularity. He sold 60 barrels in 2002. Last year, he sold 10,000.
His customers include the Town of Shrewsbury, which offers the barrels to town residents through the Shrewsbury Water Conservation Project.
