Based on a Northern Arizona University doctoral thesis, this is an interesting and important study that focuses on the religious dimension of the War of the Spanish Succession. It is instructive to see a consideration of this perspective because all too often scholarship on early-modern international relations regards the post-Westphalian age as one in which religion played no significant role. Boles shows that this was not the case. He focuses on Protestant activists, but, indeed, his conclusion could be supported were attention to be devoted to their Catholic counterparts.
