There are growing numbers of people on the globe intently focused on what kind of chips are in their computers, game machines, cell phones and cameras. This group, with perhaps a hundred million members worldwide, paid little attention to the recent groundbreaking ceremony in Malta, N.Y., where GlobalFoundries is building a 300 mm fab that will begin volume manufacturing in late 2012.
These video game aficionados, PC overclockers and road warriors don't much care if their chips are made in Kumamoto, Japan; Hsinchu, Taiwan; or Malta, N.Y. What they do care about is going faster, with better graphics. To that end, ...
