Among the agreements now pending before Congress is one signed in June 2007 by the U.S. Trade Representative and South Korea's Minister of Trade. (1) The agreement was hailed by the U.S. administration as "most commercially significant free trade agreement the United States has concluded in nearly 20 years," but it is controversial in Congress. The agreement was first announced in April 2007, (2) but in response to congressional concerns, some provisions were renegotiated pursuant to the May "bipartisan trade deal" between the administration and congressional leaders.
