Although the detention of approximately 265 persons held as unlawful combatants at Guantanamo Bay continues to draw public attention and comment in the United States and abroad, U.S. forces detain far more persons in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their status and treatment pose a variety of human rights and other legal issues.
As of early August 2008, U.S. forces reportedly held over 21,000 persons in detention facilities at Camp Bucca and Camp Cropper in Iraq, down from about 25,000.
