In June 2008, the United States joined with other members of the UN Security Council in unanimously adopting Resolution 1820, (29) which condemns sexual violence during armed conflicts. The resolution was adopted in conjunction with a ministeriallevel Security Council meeting on women, peace, and security. Inter alia, the resolution demands that all parties to armed conflicts cease immediately and completely "all acts of sexual violence against civilians" and "take appropriate measures to protect civilians, including women and girls, from all forms of sexual violence."
