What implications does Asda's battle over Parma ham have for protected origin status,
This year, Asda won a legal victory in a case the tabloids dubbed the Barmy Parma Drama. Deputy Judge Lawrence Collins, sitting in the High Court, rejected an attempt by the Italian association of Parma ham producers, Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma, to prevent Asda from selling -- as Parma ham -- genuine Parma ham.
The ham producers were adamant Asda had no right to do so. For though produced in Italy according to specific local provisions, the ham had been sliced and packaged in the UK.
