One of the world s largest producers and distributors of fresh fruit and vegetables is planning a $500 million initial public offering.

Dole Food Co. Inc. owned by N.C. Research Campus developer David Murdock filed a registration statement Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the offering of its common shares.

Dole plans to apply to list the stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DOLE.

The California-based company has three business segments: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and packaged foods.
