In the short space of four years, between 1809 and 1813, no fewer than six of the most famous 19th-century composers were born: Mendelsohn (1809), Schumann and Chopin (1810), Verdi and Wagner (1813) - and the Hungarian Franz Liszt, who lived from 1811 to 1886. Liszt is a curious figure in musical history. He was among the greatest of all piano virtuosi and a prolific composer. But how much of his music is remembered today? The Hungarian Rhapsodies, the first piano concerto and 'Les Preludes', the symphonic poem (a title he invented).
