Melodrama is alive and well and living in New Mexico
If you happen to be driving through the tiny mountain hamlet of Madrid, N.M. (population 600), about 20 miles outside of Santa Fe, don't blink - you'll miss the Engine House Theatre, purveyor of some of the slickest melodrama west of the Mississippi.
The Engine House, which performs in a funky old steam-engine repair building, is one of a handful of professional theatre companies dedicated to the preservation of the genre.
