I recently found myself skimming book after book after book - of an antiquarian nature - looking for quotations concerning drinks and drinking. It's one of my very favorite pastimes. I like to use these bon mots as part of my e-mail signature.
The more obscure they are, the happier they make me. I'm quite sure, you see, that they make me look like quite the scholar, and we high school dropouts tend to like that sort of thing.
In "On a Margin," a 1908 book about Wall Street and the financial upheavals this country was going through at the time, journalist Charles Julius Chambers was thoughtful enough to include more than a couple of splendid drinking ...
