Tens of thousands of A-level students were today waiting to discover their results as the scramble begins for university places against a backdrop of an unprecedented demand by applicants.
Experts are forecasting the toughest year for places, with a ten per cent increase in applications as youngsters look to escape unemployment in the downturn by going to university.
