A 1,000-pound bale of plastic grocery bags sat on the floor Monday at the Biomass Energy Conversion, or BECON, facility in Nevada.

It s there that Innovative Energy Solutions Inc. of Ames has set up a machine to convert the bags and other waste plastic into diesel fuel, natural gas and other usable byproducts.

The inventors hope to interest investors in using the technology to turn Iowa s estimated annual 600 million pounds of plastic waste back into burnable fuel.
