Adult attachment style has emerged as a useful heuristic in describing how people approach romantic relationships. On the basis of a self-report questionnaire, Hazan and Shaver (1987) classified attachment styles as secure (e.g., "I find it relatively easy to get close to others"), avoidant (e.g., "I am somewhat uncomfortable being close to others"), or anxious/ambivalent (e.g., "I find that others are reluctant to get as close as I would like").
