Nonprofit agencies and state government are preparing for a wave of some 99,000 jobless workers who will be exhausting their unemployment benefits by year's end, placing additional demand on assistance and services already strained by the effects of Michigan's battered economy.
In Southeast Michigan alone, about 50,000 people are expected to exhaust their jobless benefits by January, a trend occurring throughout the state as individuals who over the past year qualified for various benefit extensions reach the end of those periods.
The numbers are expected to start to ramp up later this month.
