Scrap piles may have grown or sat untouched after prices plummeted last fall, but the crash seems to have created no additional environmental worries for companies.
"We've kept up with our piles, and things are coming back in the market, said Fred Seidenberg, president of Mid-Carolina Steel and Recycling in Columbia, S.C. "Scrap was real high before the market crashed; we were working overtime to get rid of our piles, and it's not like we had piles that had been there for years and years. And we're pretty strict on what we take in.
Some scrap dealers may see fewer visits from regulators as states are forced to cut budgets ...
