"A frequent complication of orthopaedic procedures is venous thromboembolism (VTE). Hyperglycaemia has been shown to activate the coagulation system and is associated with postoperative morbidity and mortality," scientists writing in the Netherlands Journal of Medicine report (see also Von Willebrand Disease).
