ROME--It took only a few seconds and a couple of bullets to destroy what was, for the Vatican, a half-year search for a new commander of the Swiss Guards. The official line is that "a fit of madness" caused a disgruntled young soldier to take the life of the just-named Commander Alois Estermann and his wife, Gladys.
Twenty-three-year-old Cedric Tornay presumably then turned the gun on himself. But here in Rome and around the Vatican many people are less sure than church spokespersons that this shocking murder case of May 4 can be so quickly explained as a double homicide and suicide.
