SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation of Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns and named Archbishop Claudio Hummes of Fortaleza, Brazil, to replace him.
Cardinal Arns, 76, has served as archbishop of Sao Paulo since 1970. It was the world's largest archdiocese until it was split in 1989.
The cardinal became famous for his work on behalf of the poor and down-trodden, including political prisoner's and victims of torture. From 1979 until 1985, when the military regime was replaced by a civilian government, Cardinal Arns directed a clandestine project that documented the widespread use of torture against government opponents.
