"The hardest part is going upstream," says Scott Shipley. No kidding. So I ask, why paddle upstream? "Well," he explains patiently, "slalom kayaking is a lot like slalom skiing. There are gates you have to maneuver around, and sometimes one gate actually sits upstream of another." Oh.
Shipley doesn't seem bothered by my lack of knowledge about competitive kayaking. Most of the people he encounters don't know a whole lot about it. But as little as the general public knows about whitewater kayaking, it seems the world of kayakers knows even less about modern technology.
