WHEN IT WAS LAUNCHED IN 2003, the Toyota Prius was hailed as the new dawn of civilised, earth-friendly motoring. Its dual-engine (one petrol, one electric) capabilities meant it was cheap to run and low on emissions. In the Prius, the electric motor could power the car on its own but had to be recharged at a power socket.

It wasn't long before Honda released its own hybrids, in competition with the Prius. In the Insight, the petrol engine charged the electric battery.
