"Lucy," a 40-percent-complete adult female Australopithecus afarensis skeleton, was discovered in the Hadar region of Ethiopia in 1974 and is dated to approximately 3.5 million years ago. Australopithecus afarensis lived between approximately 2.7 and 4.0 million years ago, and most scientists classify them as "hominids," which means that they are apes closely related to humans. Other afarensis remains have been recovered from Ethiopia, and there is also an earlier form of Australopithecus, known as Australopithecus ramidus, dating to as early as 5 million ...
