Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki expressed great confidence in his government's ability to handle its own domestic security situation in the wake of the US withdrawal from Iraq's major cities on June 30.
The level of violence diminished in July and Al Maliki decreed that most of Baghdad's fortifications and blast walls would be dismantled by mid-September.
