Instead of a phone line Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology uses analog telephone communications to transfer and route voice and data over networks. The networks can be a wide area network, a local area network or the Internet.

The VoIP technology is being integrated into the 911 emergency telephone number system. Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) are call centers that answer emergency calls for police, firefighting, and ambulance services. U.S. has approximately 6100 primary and secondary PSAPs.
