Local salvage yard operators, car-part experts and some environmentalists say the government's "cash for clunkers" program belongs on the junk heap and are happy it's concluding tomorrow.
The Automotive Recyclers Association says the use of recycled parts over new ones saves 75 million barrels of oil a year, and the clunkers program has shed needed light on the recycling aspect of salvage yards. That's the good news, said ARA vice president Michael Wilson. The bad news is that fewer salvageable parts will be harvested because of rules mandating that the clunkers' engines and drive trains be disabled.
