European markets are now open to imports from Papua New Guinea after the signing, on 30 July, of an interim economic partnership agreement between the two sides. The accord is based on the trade in goods and contains important provisions on rules of origin for the fisheries sector. It was signed by Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton, Anders Ahnlid, director-general for trade, representing the Swedish presidency of the EU, and Samuel Abal, Papua New Guinea's minister for foreign affairs, trade and immigration.
