Passion, misplaced passion, honor, dishonor, sacrifice, selfishness, love, regret and God - it sounds like a Verdi opera to me.
The Italian master aimed his works, which are filled with gorgeous melodies and pathos, at the common people. That is why his operas like "Rigoletto" and "Aida" endure in popularity, and why the Los Angeles Opera smartly trots out "La Traviata" every few years.
Even an adequate "Traviata" would have its moments, the music is so transcending, and the L.A. Opera's production is far more than adequate.
