Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp. signed a memorandum Monday with China Mobile Ltd., the world's largest mobile carrier, to jointly develop smartphones and tap the mainland's rapidly growing telecoms market.

Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile ( CHL - news - people )'s chairman, said the Chinese carrier will invest 47 million yuan ($6.9 million) in the joint project and expects to develop at least seven models by 2010.

Yahoo! BuzzHTC, as the Taiwanese company is known, will design and develop the models, while China Mobile will provide customer service and support, Wang said.
