When Henry Hudson sailed his ship the Half Moon up the river he called the Great River, he soon realized that the waterway was not the passage to the Far East that he was searching for.

He and his crew noticed the region's natural abundance of timber, fish and fur animals, however, and he claimed the land in the name of his benefactors in the Netherlands. Hudson then sailed back to England in disappointment for not having located any "isles of spicery."

Apparently, the intrepid explorer was not a man of style. In Europe, fur supplies for cold-weather attire were at a premium.
